MAXWELL, Calif. — Property owners clearing vegetation should not assume a calm day or a fire-department permit makes outdoor burning automatically legal. Colusa County’s Air Pollution Control District says authorization from the air district is required before any open fire, and that a burn permit is also required.
Where is the permit issued?
The county specifically lists Maxwell Fire Protection District, 231 Oak Street, Maxwell, as a place to obtain a burn permit, with phone 530-438-2320. Authorization for the actual burn day is separately checked through the county’s burn status line at 530-458-0581.
What is the fall schedule?
For the county’s published fall burn period, September 15 through February 28, permitted burning hours are 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m., with flames to be extinguished by 4 p.m. This schedule applies only when burning is authorized and conditions meet applicable requirements. It does not override a temporary fire ban, strong-wind restrictions, air-quality controls or other agency orders.
What should residents verify?
Ask which materials may be burned, location and setback requirements, supervision and safe extinguishment. Never burn trash, treated construction materials or other prohibited fuels. Check the live burn-day decision the morning of the activity; the district says it normally receives the determination at 9 a.m. Do not rely on a screenshot from a previous day.
